Wednesday afternoon, October 10th: Guided Tour of Paestum Archaeological Site, located in the National Park of Cilento (click the map image to see the park), enlisted in the UNESCO Heritage List since 1998.
| | Paestum, or Poseidonia as it was initially known, was established by a group of Achaeans from Sybaris in the 6th century BC, who settled in the fertile plain on the south bank of the Sele river. The Greeks constructed three huge temples - the earliest dedicated to Hera and two more temples of doubtful dedications built between 550 and 450 BC.
The city was occupied by the Romans in 273 BC, who changed its name into Paestum and built many Roman infrastructures of roads, forum and theaters. The city was then occupied by Christians who moved there around the 5th century AD, modifying the temple erected by the Romans into churches. During the 9th century AD the territory was devastated by illnesses and Saracen raids. The city remained abandoned until the 18th century when it was discovered.
