Getting to Paestum
Paestum is approximately fifty-five miles (ninety kilometers) south of Naples, Italy.

The closest airport is Capodichino Airport (Naples International Airport). The shuttle bus "Alibus" will take you from Capodichino to Naples train station (Piazza Garibaldi). See below for instructions for the train.
By Train
Only local regionale trains stop at Paestum. From Salerno, 14 trains head to Paestum (30-40 minutes) daily. From Naples, take the local train or "through" train towards Sapri, or Paola, or Cosenza, or Reggio Calabria directions. There are 12 daily runs (74-100 minutes). Please note that sometimes the ticket office at Paestum's station (which sometimes goes by the confusingly long name "Capaccio Scalo/Roccadaspide - Paestum") can be closed; however, when it happens, you can still get on here and then pay the conductor on the train with no penalty. | | By Bus
Hourly CSTP buses (tel. +39-800-016-659), www.cstp.it) leave Salerno from Piazza della Concordia at the waterfront -- a few blocks down from the train station (and a few blocks over from where the Amalfi Coast SITA buses stop) -- and let you off right at the museum in front of the archaeological site (64 minutes). Departures on this Line 34 run hourly from 6:30 a.m. -- 12:30 p.m. then at 1:50 p.m., 2:50 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 4:35 p.m., 5:45 p.m., and 7:30 p.m., but it is advisable to check before as schedules can easily change.
There are also four daily buses from Naples (7:30 a.m., 8:10 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 9:10 p.m.). This trip takes 84 minutes.

From Salerno, take provincial road SP175A south along the coast; the drive takes about an hour. From farther afield, take Austrostrada A3 to the Battipaglia exit and follow the SS18 south (*sud*) to the Paestum exit.

From the train station, you can bargain with a taxi driver (tel. +39-0828-721-107 or tel. +39-0828-722-524) for the trip to your hotel (don't go over 20 euros). Otherwise, head out of the station and continue straight under the arch at the intersection with Via Porta Sierna. After a 15-minute, 1km (0.6-mile) stroll, the road ends at Via Magna Graecia and the archaeological site. Turn right for the museum, main site entrance and the dinky tourist office. | | Tips
Planning your day: The Paestum site itself takes about 1-2 hours to see; the museum another 40-60 minutes. You can easily do it all in one morning by taking an early train from Naples (or leave the Amalfi Coast in the morning and head to Salerno and the connection), and having lunch at the Nettuno restaurant on site, before continuing on your way.
The Paestum archeological site is open daily from 9:00 a.m. until around sunset (last entry an hour before closing). Entrance fee to Paestum excavations: 6 euros. Entrance fee to the museum only: 4 euros. Entrance fee to both Paestum and Elea excavations, and to the museum: 11 euros (valid for 3 days). Free admission for European Union citizens under 18 and over 65 years old. The Paestum museum is closed the first and third Mondays of every month. | |
